Storm Lake Register - March 12, 1940 - Final rites for Joseph H Hoffman, resident of Buena Vista county for 60 years, were held Monday afternoon at the Hughes funeral home. Mr Hoffman passed away Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Roy W Ford, 632 West Fourth. Although Mr Hoffman had been in declining health, he had been bedfast only two weeks.

Bearers were Guy Mack, DO LaGrange, George Mack, Henry Paulsen, Ed Bauman, and Ellis Bethards. Interment was in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Joseph M Hoffman was born June 5, 1852 at Pluckamin, NJ where he spent his boyhood days. Before coming to Buena Vista county he lived a few years in Illinois.

During his residence in Storm Lake he served as custodian of the Storm Lake High School for 27 years resigning in 1915. The "Breeze" year book of the high school was dedicated to him that year.

Mr Hoffman was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Walsh March 18, 1876. To their union 10 children were born, four of whom died in infancy. A daughter Mrs C.A. Haskins of St Paul, MN passed away Jan 22, 1914 and a son Arthur died Jan 28, 1931. Mrs Hoffman preceded her husband in death Dec 22, 1919.

Four daughters: Mrs Roy W Ford of Storm Lake; Mrs Josephine Watt of Vallejo, Ca; Mrs Lee Steckmest Peterson; and Mrs Max Soeth of Wallingford, survive. 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one brother, Gaius Hoffman of Bound Breck, NJ are also left to mourn besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Among those who attended from out of town were: Mr and Mrs Lee Steckmest, Frank and Mary Jane of Peterson; Mr and Mrs Max Soeth, Shirley and Lorna of Wallingford; Mr and Mrs Charles Ford of Lake View; and Mrs George Page of St Paul.
