Storm Lake Register - October 3, 1919 - Friends in this city and community were very sorry to learn on Monday last week of the death of Soren Haarup, a well known and prominent citizen of Buena Vista county for many years, who passed away at the hospital in Chicago that day, after an illness of several months.

Mr Haarup had been in failing health for some time and early in the summer went to Rochester, Minnesota in hopes of receiving relief from his illness; however, he gained but little encouragement and returned to his home here. Two weeks before his death he went to Chicago to enter the hospital for treatment and was in hopes of regaining his health but it seemed that nothing could be done to save his life and he passed away on Monday. Mr Haarup was a friend to everyone in the community and his death has caused much sorrow.

Soren Haarup was born in Denmark September 2, 1867. He lived in the land of his birth until 31 years of ago, coming to the United States in the spring of 1888 and locating at Pomeroy, Iowa. He lived there for about three years, when he came to Buena Vista county, locating at Newell, and has spent the rest of his life in the vicinity of Newell and Storm Lake.

On May 1, 1892 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Mickelson at Newell, Iowa, and to this happy union five fine sons were born, who with the wife and mother are left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and father. They are: James, Harry, Arthur, Elmer, and George. Besides the wife and sons he leaves his father, Henry Haarup, of Early; two brothers, Henry Haarup of Storm Lake, and Carl Haarup of New Jersey; and one sister, Mrs Carrie Jensen of Early. He also leaves other relatives and hosts of friends.

The remains were brought to this city Thursday morning accompanied by the wife, who had been with him during his illness in Chicago, and his son, Harry, who had gone to Chicago Sunday to be with his father.

Funeral services were held at the Lakeside Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev Donald M Grant, and interment was in the local cemetery. The family have the sympathy of a host of friends in their bereavement.
