Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - October 1, 1936 - The body of George O Fowler, early day resident of Storm Lake was brought to Storm Lake early Wednesday by Miss Alice Fowler of Ely, MN a sister, and laid to rest in the family lot at Storm Lake. This is the fourth visit to this city on the part of Miss Fowler on a sad mission such as this. Miss Fowler was met by Morton J. Hughes who took charge of the final rites. At 9:30 a.m. about twenty old friends gathered in the funeral chapel where Rev. J.F. Zempke read the scripture lesson. Miss Fowler returned to Minneapolis Thursday morning.
George Ordway Fowler was born at Storm Lake May 28, 1872, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Rivers John Fowler. His early education was obtained in the schools of Storm Lake, where he took on active part in high school football. He completed a two-year course at the Dixon, Illinois business college. He then engaged in the Insurance business at Rock Rapids, Iowa. Here he married Miss Alphacetta Hollister of Wisconsin in 1900.
To this union were born two sons. Later the family moved to Wisconsin and from there to Minneapolis, where he resided a number of years. His wife died in 1928. From Minneapolis he moved alone in 1926 to Turtle River, Minn, where he engaged in farming and developed a small summer resort on Three Island Lake.
Two years ago his health became impaired and he consulted the clinic at University hospital. From November 1, 1935 until Easter last spring, he received medical care at the University hospital for stomach ulcer and heart trouble. He returned to his home in northern Minnesota where marked improvement was made during the summer under the devoted care of his sister, who has spent her summer vacations with him.
After her departure to resume her teaching this fall, he suffered a relapse and was taken to the Bemidji hospital a week ago. At 5:15 a.m. Sunday September 27, 1936 he passed away. No knowledge of his condition was given to members of his family, and none were present. The sister at Ely was notified and she brought the family to Minneapolis Sunday night.
He is survived by his two sons: Walter J. and Forrest C. Fowler, both living in the Twin Cities; two brothers: Rivers John, Portland, Ore, who visited him this summer, and Walter E Fowler, a patient at the Veterans hospital; his sister, Alice J. a teacher at Ely, Minn; several nieces and nephews among whom, Mrs M.H. Lienan of St. Paul, visited his home recently. A four months old grandson paid him a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Fowler over Labor day.
Mr. Fowler's faith in God was deep and abiding from early manhood. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. During his hospitalization, he enjoyed pastoral visits from the clergy at Gethsemane Episcopal church, who conducted the funeral service at 4 p.m. September 29 at the Johnson funeral chapel at 1900 Hennepin avenue.
