April 18, 1919 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Scores of old friends in this city were deeply grieved when the word came from Marshalltown last Saturday of the death of Mrs. R.M. Ash, which occurred on that day. The Ash family lived many years in this city and still have many friends among the readers of this newspaper.

Louisa L. Thomas was born in Mentz county, N.S, March 9, 1839. Her girlhood days were spent here in school and teaching until March 2, 1858, when she was united in marriage with James M. Foster of Mount Pleasant, Racine county, Wis.

To this union was born five sons: William C. of North Yakima, Wash.; Elmer E. of Marshalltown, Iowa; Walter G. of Kansas City, Kans.; Clyde W of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Fred J. of Marshalltown, Iowa. Here they remained until the spring of 1876, when they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa.

They had nearly completed their new home when the father was stricken and died August 29 of the same year, leaving the mother and five boys among comparative strangers, but the strong arm she had trusted in youth was her stay and staff to lean upon now. She had been an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the societies connected therewith until ill health compelled her to relinquish them, but she always had the abiding presence of the Master.

On April 28, 1889, she became the wife of R.M. Ash and a mother to his two motherless children, Fisk and Grace. On August 1900, she and Mr. Ash went to Marshalltown their home with church and people. She was a charter member of the W.R.C. of Storm Lake and later transferred her membership to the corps at Marshalltown.

Besides the husband and children and eleven grandchildren who survive her, she leaves two brothers: Samuel M. Thomas of Port Byron, N.Y. and Charles F. Thomas of Syracuse, N.Y.

The remains were brought to this city on Monday and the funeral services were held that afternoon at three o'clock at the home of U.G. Burton. Rev. W.T. MacDonald, D.D., officiating. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery. This newspaper joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Foster of Emmetsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Foster and Elmer G. Foster of Marshalltown were present at the funeral.
