January 10, 1908 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Anna Barbara Backes was born at Millfelt, Prussia, January 30, 1840 and died Thursday morning, January 1908, lacking 28 days of being 69 years old.
She emigrated to the United States in 1853, at the age of l3 years, settling first at Cinncinnati, Ohio, and soon after moving to Clayton, Iowa. Here she was married to George Fettis, who was born at Aberdeen, Scotland, on September 6, 1831, being well on the way to 77 years of age when she died.
Three children were born to them, Jennie who died in infancy and George and Jessie who still survive her.
They came to Sac county, Iowa, in 1872 where they lived on farm for 18 years, thence moving to Storm Lake in 1890, where they have ever since resided. On the fifth of May, 1895 she professed her faith in Christ, her acceptance of him as her personal Savior and was received in to membership at the Lakeside church.
Mrs. Fettis was one of the kindest and most motherly of women, she was a great home body so that not so many knew her, but all those that did, valued her friendship to the utmost. Although she was not actively engaged in church work the latter part of her life, her life itself and her actions to all were of the highest type of Christianity. We were privileged to be slightly acquainted with her and her kind ways and interest shown will never be forgotten. Words are a poor way of showing sympathy, and they do not express what we feel but we trust that the grief stricken daughter and husband will find comfort that no words can give and will always remember that though she is not here in bodily form, her influence and her actions will continue to be felt and the good that she has done will make her a living presence forever.
