April 17, 1934 - Storm Lake Register - Mrs James DeLand, wife of Judge James DeLand, and one of Storm Lake's most beloved women, died at her home, on 118 Lake avenue, early Saturday morning at the age of 72 years. Death followed a five weeks illness with pneumonia and complications. A pioneer resident of Storm Lake and long prominent in the community, Mrs DeLands death has caused universal sadness.

Mrs. Deland, formerly Ida E. Sherman, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs. J.H. Sherman. She was born at Annapolis, Ind and lived at Chillicothe, Mo and Winterset prior to moving to Storm Lake.

Her marriage to James DeLand took place at the home of her father in Storm Lake on September 4, 1882. The entire married life of the couple was spent here. For nearly 44 years Mr and Mrs DeLand have lived in their home on Lake Avenue.

After their marriage Mr and Mrs. DeLand farmed for a year and then moved to Storm Lake, where Mr DeLand began the study of law. Later he attended the University of Iowa, where he was graduated from the law school. He began the practice of law in this city. In 1917 he was appointed a judge of the 14th Judicial district.

A most happy occasion in the lives of Judge and Mrs DeLand was the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary on September 4, 1932. More than 500 of their friends assisted them in observing the day. During the many years that she resided in Storm Lake, Mrs. DeLand was prominently identified with the life of the community. She was a charter member and former president of the Tuesday club, pioneer Storm Lake club. She served as Worthy High Priestess of Aleppo White Shrine and as president of the Service Star Legion.

Surviving are the husband, Judge James DeLand; one son, J. Lael DeLand, cashier of the Commercial Trust & Savings bank; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. J Lael DeLand; two granddaughters: Barbara Jean and Janet DeLand, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Lakeside Presbyterian church Monday afternoon with a tremendous crowd in attendance. The pulpit was banked with flowers, the display attesting the high regard in which the deceased woman was held. With Prof. Charles Sager directing, the Buena Vista college chapel choir sang three numbers from The Messiah. Dr. E.L. Gibson conducted the service, dwelling upon the activities of Mrs. DeLand, her fondness for music and the leadership she has manifested along musical, social and patriotic lines and in church work.

Bearers were attorneys from Storm Lake: Guy E. Mack, A.L. Whitney, W.C. Edson, J.S. Whitney, Z.Z. White and Don C. White. The body was laid to rest in the Storm Lake cemetery. Judge George A. Heald of Spencer, and Judge F.C. Davidson of Emmetsburg, who are associated with Judge DeLand on the bench in the 14th district, attended the obsequies. Former Judge Daniel Coyle of Humboldt, who served on the bench along with Judge DeLand, was also in attendance. In addition, attorneys from all over this section of Iowa paid their final respects to Mrs. DeLand. Many were accompanied by their wives. Members of the Tuesday club of which Mrs. DeLand was the last charter member, attended in a body as did other organizations in which she had been prominent.
