October 12, 1954 - Storm Lake Register - James E DeLand was born in Union county, Ohio June 13, 1859. He was educated in the Clinton, IL schools and later attended the State University of Iowa where he received his Bachelors of Law degree in 1887.

Mr DeLand was married to Ida E Sherman and they had one son, James Lael. Mrs DeLand passed away and he was married in 1936 to Nelle F Pushoff.

Mr DeLand farmed for several years in Buena Vista county after which he practiced law in Storm Lake from 1897 to 1917. As that time he was named district court judge and he served in that capacity for 22 years. (Can't read the next part.)

Judge DeLand was honored in Sept 1942 when a large photograph of him was hung in the judges chambers in the Buena Vista county courthouse.

Judge Deland passed away Monday Oct 11 at the age of 93 years. He had been making his home with his wife in Canoga Park, CA.

His wife preceded him in death and he is survived by his son, James Lael DeLand and his grand daughter.
