November 21, 1913 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Gerrit Smith Coman, son of Isaac W Coman and Elizabeth Kinnie, was born at Jefferson, Ashtabula county, Ohio, June 14, 1849.

Soon after the family moved to Lockport, NY and later in 1855 to Buffalo. In 1860 deceased went to Wisconsin (his father having married the second time) where he remained until the spring of 1860, when he started a trip to see something of the world. Seven years were spent in the great southwest (Kansas, Indian Territory, Arkansas and Texas). In 1876, he came to Storm Lake, where he has spent most of his time since.

He was married to Miss Leora Wirick October 9, 1878. He died in Kansas City, MO. November 11, 1913.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, one sister, and his step-mother.

For 34 years Mr Coman had been a resident of Storm Lake and had in former years been closely identified with the commercial interests of the city. About 6 years ago because of ill health he was forced to retire from active business. He was a man of sterling integrity and unblemished character, loyal and true to his friends and honest in all his business transactions.

For the past few years he, with his wife, spent the winter months in California, where he has had some property interest. They had planned to spend this winter in the west. They left Storm Lake about a month ago and visited in Kansas City where he was under care of Dr E.E. Reed, who was a very close and intimate friend.

But it was ordered that he should not go futher and on November 11, he went to the undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns. The remains were brought to this city Thursday and were taken to the Coman home on Lake Avenue where the funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev T.A. Ambler. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Those from out of town who were here for the funeral included: Mrs M.A. Coman, step-mother, and Miss Lucy Coman, sister of Elkhorn, WI, Mrs Charles House, Mr and Mrs William House and Mrs G.L. Foy, nieces and nephews of Milwaukee; Dr and Mrs J.H. Lawrence, Mrs F.L. Wirick, Mrs J.F. Toy of Sioux City; Mrs G.G. Wirick of Perry, Dr and Mrs MacKay of Sheldon; A.R. Leyson of Omaha, and Mrs E.E. Reed of Kansas City, who accompanied Mrs Coman home from that place.
