April 22, 1898 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Thomas Cole died last Friday morning at his home in this city of sciatic rheumatism complicated with other diseases with which he had been afflicted since last June.

Deceased was born in Herefordshire, England Jan 14, 1824. At the age of 24 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Russell and one year afterward they came to this country residing first at Canandaigua, NY where they remained two years; after which they moved to Will county, Illinois where they lived for 32 years; and then came to Iowa, locating in Grant township, this county.

Two and 1/2 years ago they moved to Storm lake. Mr Cole was converted to the M.E. church at New Lenox, Illinois and was ever after a faithful consistent member of that denomination. He was class leader and steward for many years at Manhattan, Illinois. Throughout his long and intensely painful illness, his faith and trust in the promises of the Master were always a source of comfort and strength to him, enabling him to bear his sufferings with true Christian fortitude.

He was the father of 8 children: Geo W, Edgar J, and Sidney L Cole of Grant township; A.T. Cole of Alta; Edwin P Cole of Manhattan, Illinois; Mrs Agnes T Morse of Newell; Mrs Lillie K Soeth of Marathon; and Miss Mary A Cole, who had remained always with her parents; all grown to adult life and occupying honorable and useful places in society.

The high esteem in which the deceased was held and the sympathy felt for the bereaved family in their loss of a kind and living husband and father were shown by the large attendance at the funeral which was held Sunday from the M.E. church. Rev G.W. Pratt conducted the services and in his sermon paid an eloquent and touching tribute to the deceased as a noble example of honorable, useful, Christian manhood. The pall bearers were: Edgar E Mack, J.W. Planalp, K Williams, Wm Watson, I.B. Williams and F.M Schwarz.
