November 11, 1904 Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - The funeral services of Mrs. C.R. Brockway were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday Nov. 9, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.U. McDiarmid. The service was conducted by Rev. H.V. Cumin, who spoke very fittingly from the text found in Rev. 14.-13. Music was furnished by a choir composed of E.E. Mack, K.R. Sisson, Mrs. James DeLand and Miss Goodell.
The only relatives present from out of town were Dr. and Mrs. Graham of Early. A son and daughter from Creston were unable to be present on account of sickness.
Christiana R. Graham was born in Delaware county, New York, May 12, 1825, of Scotch parentage. Was married to Ira Hawkins, Dec 27, 1843. To them were born four children, two of whom, John C Hawkins of Chicago and Mrs. Angelia Gaylord of Redlands, California, survive her. Ira Hawkins died July 9, 1856.
She was married to Edmond Brockway Sept. 6, 1857, he dying May 23, 1885. To them were born four children, one dying in infancy. Mrs. Florence L. Haughey of Creston, Ia., Mrs. Julia M. McDiarmid of Storm Lake and Edmund G. Brockway of Kent, Ia., mourn the loss of the dear mother.
Her second husband, having four young children at the time of their marriage, she was thus mother of twelve children. One son and one step son answered their country's call in 1862.
Coming to Illinois in 1844, before a railroad had reached Chicago, she helped to make a home out on the prairie in Kendall county on the United States government land.
She removed to Buena Vista county, Iowa, in March, 1881, where she resided near and at Storm Lake, until moving to Creston in March, 1901. Many of the troubles, sorrows and cares common to the life have fallen to her lot, but she bore them all in the christian spirit, steadfast in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was brought up in the United Presbyterian church, but was later connected with the Presbyterian and Congregational churches. In her years of strength, was there any one sick or in trouble in her neighborhood she was there to help, comfort, and to bless. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances.
"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, they rest from their labors and their works do follow them."
