November 19, 1915 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Philip Baumann was born April 10, 1836, in Dornheim, Hessia, Germany.

In early youth he was deprived of his parents and was reared by his grandmother. In his sixteenth year he together with his brother, Jacob, emigrated to this country, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. There he found employment for a number of years, after which he went to Hamilton, Ohio.

Being a saving young man he soon accumulated enough money to buy a 40 acre tract of land. During his sojourn in Hamilton he became acquainted with Catherine Richter, with whom he was on the 14th day of February united in marriage.

They settled on the purchased forty acres of land near Clinton, DeWitt county, Illinois. In 1883 he moved with his family to Iowa purchasing a farm in Maple Valley Township, where they remained until he retired moving to town in 1904.

During this year he was taken seriously ill and since then he has been afflicted. In the forepart of this year he, with his wife, was permitted to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in the presence of a number of friends and relatives.

A little more than three weeks ago Mr. Baumann was taken seriously ill and on October 30th was confined to his bed. During this time he suffered intense pain, and Tuesday evening he was taken to Chicago where an operation was performed on Wednesday morning. At first everything seemed very favorable, but next morning it was noticed that he would not recover. At 12:30 p.m., Thursday, November 11th, at the Wesley Hospital, in the presence of his son Charles, who accompanied him, he passed away, reaching the age of 79 years, 7 months and one day.

At 1:30 Sunday afternoon the funeral services occurred at the home conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.T. Lochner, and at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. Here the services were conducted in both the German and English language, the German sermon as delivered by the pastor of the local Lutheran church while the English was delivered by the Rev. E.A. Brauer from Van Meter, Iowa, the former pastor of Mr. Baumann. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Those present from out of town at the funeral services were Fred and Philip Baumann, Mrs. Wm. Baumann, and Mrs. Emma Grathwohl, all of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois; and Mr. Jacob Reichter and Mrs. Forence Durst of Goldfield, Iowa.
