January 6, 1905 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - J.A. Barnes died at his home January 1, 1905, Sunday at 5 o'clock a.m. from the effects of cancer from which he had been suffering for over 22 years.

John Barnes was born in Mercer county, PA May 17, 1840. At the age of 21 years he left the east and settled at Decatur, Illinois. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army and served for 3 years returning at the close of the war to Decatur.

Sept 4, 1866 he was married to Miss Rebecca Taylor. Seven children were born to this union, two sons and five daughters. They are W.T. Barnes of Cherokee, James of this city, Mrs Eva Stevens of Estherville, Mrs T Herbert of Bloomington, Mrs F.S. Ash of Marshalltown, and Edith and Pearl. All were present at the funeral.
