Marlene Ardis Grunig
July 12, 1928 - December 14, 2015

Marlene A. Grunig, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, December 14, 2015, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Marlene Ardis Olson, a daughter of Emmanuel and Hedvig (Hultman) Olson, was born on July 12, 1928, in Albert City, Iowa.

In 1941, Marlene was baptized at the Assembly of God Church in Storm Lake. In 1947, she was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Marlene attended Albert City Consolidated School until the third grade. Then, she transferred to the school in Early for one year before moving to Storm Lake where she graduated in 1946.

On May 18, 1947, Marlene married Lester Louis Grunig at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Tom, Susan, and Mary.

Throughout her life, Marlene remained active at St. John’s Lutheran Church, volunteering for the Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, and as a Sunday school teacher. She will be remembered for always putting Christ at the center of her life.

Marlene viewed her trip to Europe as particularly memorable. She, also, enjoyed attending and watching Iowa Hawkeye Football games. Most of all, however, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Tom (Kristin) Grunig, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Susan Miller, of Littleton, Colorado, and Mary (Terry) Parson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Ben Grunig, of Arvada, Colorado, Kelly Grunig, of Sioux City, Iowa, Chad (Kelsey) Miller, of Centreville, Virginia, Sean Miller, of Littleton, Colorado, Kara (Edwin) Lorenzo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tyler (Melinda) Parson, of Holstein, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Alexis and Azik Lester Grunig, of Parker, Colorado, Belle and Cayden Hathaway, of Sioux City, Iowa, Lina and Adonis Lorenzo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Silas and Deacon Parson, of Holstein, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Marian Kjolhede, of Alta, Iowa; and her brother-in-law, Charles (Dorothy) Perrin, of Cherokee, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Grunig, in 2013; her step-father, John Harrison; her sisters, Doris (Howard) Hall, Joyce Perrin, and Arleta Cossman; her son-in-law, Michael Miller; and her brothers-in-law, Roy (Gladys) Grunig, Arnold Kjolhede, Ansgar (Lorna) Forsberg, and Joseph (Ellen) Heun.
