Richard Dean Hanson
January 5, 1937 - October 3, 2015

Richard Hanson, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at his home in Storm Lake.

The youngest of five children, Richard Dean Hanson, a son of Albert and Martha (Batt) Hanson, was born on January 5, 1937, in rural Fonda, Iowa. Baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Knoke, Iowa, in 1939 and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pomeroy in 1952, he attended school in Fonda, graduating from Fonda High School in 1956.

On January 7, 1957, Richard entered the United States Army. After honorably serving his country, he was discharged on October 10, 1958. On August 13, 1961, he married Donna Lee Buse at the United Methodist Church in Marathon, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with three sons: Kevin Dean, Wade A., and Mark Lee.

For many years, Richard worked at HyGrade in Storm Lake and later at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center as a custodian. In addition to his work, he had many other interests. He enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. He had many pleasant memories of his travels, especially of his trips to Germany and Hawaii. Moreover, as a member of the Elks Lodge, he served as an Inner Guard. Most of all, however, Richard loved his family. Whether eating donuts with his wife and sons on Saturday mornings, planning a family vacation, or spending time with his grandchildren, he, always, put his family first. He loved time spent with his great grandkids, Seth and Zach. They, always, looked forward to having great fun on Halloween at Gramp’s.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna Lee Hanson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Kevin Hanson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Wade (Mylynn) Hanson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mark Hanson, of Bloomington, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Evan, Kole, and Zane Hanson; Paige and Brett Korn; and Britney (Josh) Randolph; and his great grandchildren: Seth and Zach Randolph; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Martha; his brothers: Wilbur (Grace) and Orin (Merna) Hanson; and his sisters: Ethel (Chuck) Engle, Velda (George) Sage, and an infant sister, Velma.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery in Pomeroy, Iowa. Visitation will take place Monday, October 5, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
