Ethel Johnson, 90, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on July 23, 2015, at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa.

Ethel, a daughter of George and Christena (Mortensen) Johnson, was born on December 20, 1924, in rural Moorhead, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, she attended school at and graduated from Moorhead Public Schools.

Trained at Dana College, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), and the University of Colorado at Greeley, she earned her Master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

She began her teaching career in rural schools in Monona County. She taught at Moorhead, Sergeant Bluff, and Ida Grove before retiring after teaching for thirty-four years in Storm Lake.

In younger years, she enjoyed traveling, reading, knitting, doing counted cross-stitch, and playing cards. An active volunteer at the Buena Vista Medical Center after she retired from teaching, she , also, belonged to the BVRMC Auxiliary and PEO.

When her health began to fail, she moved to a nursing home in Boone, Iowa, to be closer to relatives.

Her parents, three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Velma, as well as by several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She enjoyed receiving birthday greetings each year from her many friends in Storm Lake. Storm Lake was always home to her.

Graveside service will be held at Spring Valley Cemetery near Moorhead, Iowa, at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
