Joanne M. Pedersen, age 81, of Newell, Iowa, died on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Joanne Marilyn Janssen, a daughter of John and Esther (Martens) Janssen, was born on January 9, 1934, in Persia, Iowa.

Baptized by the Trinity Lutheran Church Pastor on May 20, 1934, and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell in August, 1952, Joanne attended country school near Persia before graduating from Newell Community School. On December 27, 1952, she married Gunnar Pedersen at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Together, they raised three children: Carol, Diane, and Dale.

Known for her fabulous cooking, baking, and canning skills, Joanne prepared fantastic meals for her family. In addition, a care giver for many, she was, always, willing to help out, especially at church. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading. Without a doubt, she will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Gunnar Pedersen, of Newell, Iowa; her children: Carol (Steve) Williams, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Diane (Keith) Marshall, of Indianola, Iowa, and Dale (Dorie) Pedersen, of Newell, Iowa; her grandchildren: Brenda (Kyle) Klein, of Carroll, Iowa, Brian (Tatum) Williams, of LeMars, Iowa, Christi Williams, of Brookings, South Dakota, Greg (Robyn) Marshall, of Norwalk, Iowa, Andy (Meridith) Marshall, of Denver, Colorado, Leslie Marshall, of Kansas City, Kansas, Kelli Erie (Peter Ganahl), Ankeny, Iowa, and Kane Pedersen, of Newell, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Alexandria and Aiden Klein; Brady and Addison Williams; Ethan and Evan Marshall; and Taevah and Canden Ganahl; and her sisters, Arlene (Everett) Boettcher, of Blue Grass, Iowa, and Sharon (James) Taylor, of Maysville, North Carolina; as well as extended family members and many friends.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esther Janssen; her brother, Duane “Bud” Janssen; and her parents-in-law, Jens and Lillie Pedersen.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 12, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
