Charlyn McDanel, age 87, of Alta, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the North Lake Manor of Storm Lake.
On February 7, 1928, a baby girl born at an old hospital was immediately adopted by Charlie and Mae Miller and given the name Charlyn. She grew up with them as her loving parents in Alta, Iowa. She attended Alta schools where she had twelve years of perfect attendance.
Charlyn married Richard McDanel on August 22, 1946, one month after Richard returned from World War II. The ceremony took place in her parents’ living room with Rev. Dale of the United Methodist Church officiating. To this union, four children were born, Michael, Kandi, Joel, and Kelli. Later, two girls from New Jersey, Lynn Lundquist and Ellen Kilmeier, came to Buena Vista College and joined the brood. In the 7th grade, Janice Molgaard, also, became part of the family and has been calling her mom ever since.
An avid horsewoman and active in Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary, Charlyn served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and played piano in church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Elsie (McDanel) Adams.
Charlyn is survived by her husband, Richard, of Alta, Iowa; her children, Michael (Carol) McDanel, of Alta, Iowa, Kandi (Jim) Schooley, of Mayfield, Kentucky, Joel (Gail) McDanel, of Humboldt, Iowa, and Kelli (David) Sanders, of Alta, Iowa; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews, Pat Reese, and family, Pete Adams, and family of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marjorie Adams, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Dick Adams, and family of Fairmont, Minnesota, as well as several extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta with the Rev. Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta. A visitation will be on Sunday, April 26, 2015, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM with an Order of the Eastern Star Service at 7:30 PM at the Nicklas D.
