Verla A. Anderson
January 28, 1913 - February 23, 2015

Verla Alice Anderson, age 102, of Storm Lake, Iowa, a loving, active mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 23, 2015.

Verla was born on January 28, 1913, to Verl A. and Katie B. (Miller) Alstott in Webster County, Iowa. She lived with her parents on a farm in Pocahontas County near Laurens, Iowa, and graduated in 1931 from Ware High School in Ware, Iowa. After attending Buena Vista College, she taught school in Buena Vista County. Among her college memories, she, especially, recalls singing with the Girls’ College Sextet and making a trip to Ames, Iowa, to sing at a radio station broadcasting a musical event.

On December 24, 1935, Verla married Chester C. Anderson at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Rev. Arrosmith officiating. Their happy marriage lasted for more than sixty years. The mother of three sons, Roger, and twin sons, Craig and Caroll, Verla spent her early years as a homemaker striving to make a comfortable home for her family and to make each one feel special. She spent many hours beautifying their home and yard with flowers. Devoted to her family, her home, and her church, she, also, endeavored to help others. She felt such joy when her family spent time with her and a special sense of pride in her three sons’ accomplishments.

A gifted seamstress, Verla sewed wedding clothes, special occasion dresses, suits, and many shirts, and she made drapes and many quilts for her family and friends as well. She could make something old look beautiful and useful. In addition, she could repair and fix many household problems. Always busy, she enjoyed music, cooking, baking, and flowers. Her home was always open to friends and neighbors.

Chester and Verla enjoyed traveling with their three sons in most of the continental United States and Canada. Later, after they retired, they traveled to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada and spent their winters in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children and grandchildren: her son, Roger (Judy) Anderson, of Storm Lake, and their children: David (Norma) Anderson, of Carrollton, Texas, Susan (Steve) Webster, of Arlington, Texas, and Steve (Amy) Anderson, of Overland Park, Kansas; her son, Craig (Mary) Anderson, and their children, all in the Omaha, Nebraska, area: Barry, Mark (Jackie), Jill, and Michael (Robin) Kussman; her son, Caroll (Ardys) Anderson, and their children, all in the West Des Moines, Iowa, area: Kristina Anderson, and her husband Firoz Khan, and Reed (Melissa) Anderson; her great grandchildren: Hailey, Paige, Sydney, and Sam Anderson; Alyssa, Amanda, Bailey, Caleb, Christopher, Jackson, Jacob, Joshua, Lucas, Nick, and Spencer Kussman; Anderson James (AJ), Danielle, and Malea Mikeworth; and her great-great grandchildren: Cecilia, Cheyanne, Gabrielle, Andrew, Jr., and Emma Sandquist; her sister, Aletha Workman Alstott, of Sun Lakes, Arizona; and her sister-in-law Elene Alstott, Laurens, Iowa; as well as many other family members and a host of friends.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents, Verl A. and Katie B. Alstott; her husband, Chester C. Anderson, on October 14, 1992; her brother, Francis Alstott; her brother and sister-in-law, Kenyon and Beulah Alstott; and her sister, Miriam Samsel, and her husband, Jim, all of Laurens, Iowa.
