Michael Eugene Porter
June 23, 1941 - October 29, 2014Michael Eugene Porter, son of Hubert and Melva Fredricksen Porter, was born on June 23, in the year of our Lord 1941, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Baptized into the Christian faith as an infant in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Alta, he was confirmed in his faith on May 29, 1955, by Pastor Walter Mueller at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. He remained a member there for the rest of his life.
Mike attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1959. In 1963, he enlisted into the United States Army and served in Georgia before his honorable discharge in 1965.
On April 24, 1966, Michael married Virginia “Ginny” Nimmo at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The Lord blessed them with three children: Jeff, Eric, and Jodie.
Michael and Ginny lived on the farm north of Storm Lake. In addition to farming, Mike, later, worked for the United States postal service in Storm Lake as a mail carrier. He retired in 2005.
Mike loved to golf and bowl. He had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh. Active in his church, he served as an Elder. A member of the AMVETS, he, especially, liked to serve as a member of the Honor Guard. Starting in 2005, Michael and Ginny wintered in Arizona. In all his activities, he valued his family and friends the most.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Doug Hines.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ginny Porter, of Alta, Iowa; his children: Jeff (JoAnne) Porter, of Clemmons, North Carolina, Eric (Julie) Porter, of Farmington, Minnesota, and Jodie Porter, of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Joe (Brooke) Murray and Jacob, Kyle, and Jason Porter; his great-grandchild, Foster Murray; and his sister, Judith (Keith) Hines, of Sac City, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
We would especially like to thank the staff of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, the University of Iowa Hospital, the Mercy Medical Center, in Sioux City, and the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center for their loving care throughout Michael’s illness.
