Fred H. Jansen
December 14, 1926 - September 10, 2014

Fred Jansen, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Frederick “Fred” Henry Jansen was born on December 14, 1926, in Early, Iowa, a son of Leo and Elizabeth (Faber) Jansen. Baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, he attended country school during his youth.

On September 20, 1949, Fred married Rita Overmohle at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with seven children: Kenneth, James, Joleen, Patricia, John, David, and Joseph.

Drafted towards the end of World War II and stationed in Alaska, Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on December 30, 1945.

An active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and a fourth Degree Knight, Fred served on the cemetery board and as an usher.

In his spare time, Fred enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and farming. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grilling on Sundays. He was famous for his stuffed sausage. Fred will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Rita Jansen, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Ken Jansen, of Grand Island, Nebraska, Jim (Radina) Jansen, of Spencer, Iowa, Joleen (Doug) Doty, of La Vista, Nebraska, Pat (Rob) Henderson, of Waconia, Minnesota, John (Glenda) Jansen, of Omaha, Nebraska, Dave (Denise) Jansen, of La Vista, Nebraska, and Joe (Nancy) Jansen, of Chaska, Minnesota; eighteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; his sisters: Sister Rita, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Agatha (Richard) Sholly, of Stanchfield, Minnesota, and Arlene (Melvin) Morfeld, of La Vista, Nebraska; his brothers-in-law, Lu Verne (Eileen) Overmohle, of Wapello, Iowa, and Dave Breon, of Sperry, Iowa; his sisters-in-law: Rose Ann (Francis) Koch, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Betty (Don) Schmitt, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Lois Kestel and Nancy Overmohle both of Schaller, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law; his brother, Ray Jansen; his sister, Mary Brenner; his brothers-in-law: Joe Brenner, Leo and Donald Overmohle, and Norman Kestel; and his sisters-in-law: Marian Jansen, Rosemary Overmohle, and Mary Breon.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, September 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2014, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, all at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
