Rex Edward Thomsen
October 17, 1952 - June 3, 2014

Rex Edward Thomsen, age 61, of Scottville, Michigan, died suddenly on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at his home.

Rex was born on October 17, 1952, in Storm Lake, a son of Eggert A. and Alberta L. (Kaskadden) Thomsen. During the Vietnam Conflict, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a drill instructor, a role in which he took a great deal of pride. After completing his military service, Rex worked for his father at Mid States Real Estate and for the Newell Public Schools before moving to Scottville where he worked for Stokely's Cannery in the accounting office.

On February 17, 1973, Rex married Sharon Buffenbarger in Jacksonville, North Carolina. They had celebrated forty-one years by each other's side.

Rex enjoyed woodworking, especially doing fretwork and building birdhouses. He also liked to spend time deer hunting, fishing, camping, and working in his gardens. A die hard Iowa Hawkeye fan, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer his favorite team on and show his true colors. He also liked to follow the Tigers and Lions, and loved watching classic John Wayne westerns.

Rex will be greatly missed by his wife, Sharon; his son, Edward Thomsen, and his wife, Sarah, of Allegan, Michigan; his daughter, Cynthia Thomsen, of Scottville; his beloved grandsons, Anthony, William, Joseph, and Charles; his father, Eggert Thomsen, and his wife, Inez, of Newell; his sisters, Donna Biggins, of Colorado, and Ruth Westergaard, Susan Puhrmann, and her husband, Mark, and Shirley Watkins, all of Iowa; and his brother, Don Thomsen, of Florida; as well as by many nieces and nephews. Rex was preceded in death by his son, Philip, in January 2002, and his mother, Alberta Thomsen, in 2006.

Memorial Services will be held for Rex at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. 2014, at the Stephens Funeral Home in Scottville, Michigan, with Rev. Jack Conklin of the Scottville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial with Honor Guard rites will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Scottville. Friends may meet with his family for a time of visitation on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Those who wish to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Disabled American Veterans.
