Marlyn D. Schumann
March 10, 1928 - June 19, 2014

Marlyn D. Schumann, age 86, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Marlyn Dale Schumann was born on March 10, 1928, in rural Varina, Iowa, the son of LuVerne and Ada (Rosene) Schumann. Baptized and later confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Varina, he remained a lifelong member.

Growing up, Marlyn attended school in Varina, graduating with a class of two in 1945. Then in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

On June 27, 1954, Marlyn married Mavis Caboth at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Subsequently, they lovingly adopted four children to call their own: Dale, Marlys, Drew, and Marlene.

A pillar in the community, a member of the Farm Bureau Board, the Varina American Legion, and the United Methodist Church in Varina, Marlyn faithfully served on many church boards, took pride in caring for the Varina Cemetery as sexton for over forty years, and served as a 4-H leader.

A devoted, lifelong farmer, Marlyn lived, laughed, and worked equally hard and truly believed that he could fix anything. Although he thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of agriculture, he most liked raising livestock. Nevertheless, he always put his family first. His grandchildren and great granddaughter were his pride and joy. Marlyn will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, neighbor, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost sixty years, Mavis Schumann of Newell, Iowa; his children: Dale (Jayne) Schumann, of Lakeside, Iowa, Marlys (Tim) Elliott, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Drew (Ellen) Schumann, of Newton, Iowa, and Marlene Schumann, of Bozeman, Montana; his grandchildren: Jennifer (Chad) Hustedt, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Nathan Schumann (Natalie Hall), of Downing, Missouri, Kelani Schumann and Kate Schumann, both of Newton, Iowa, and Sada Schumann, of Bozeman, Montana; and his great granddaughter, Paisley Hustedt; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many friends.

Marlyn was preceded in death by his parents, LuVerne and Ada Schumann; and three brothers: Frederick, William, and Darrell Schumann.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Varina. Burial will be in the Varina Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will take place on Monday, June 23, 2014, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
