December 14, 1928 - June 22, 2014

Arlene Nelson, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

A daughter of Sam and Suzie (Planting) Vanderby, Arlene Mary Nelson was born on December 14, 1928, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She attended school in Emmetsburg, graduating in 1945.

On November 26, 1950, Arlene married Henry Nelson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with six children: Harlan, Dennis, Donna, Steven, Richard, and Eric.

Arlene was baptized at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake in 1968 where she currently was a member.

Arlene enjoyed participating in her bowling league. Otherwise, she loved to do crossword puzzles, gamble, drink wine, play cards, and watch the “The Price Is Right” and the Chicago Cubs. She also enjoyed spending many hours knitting afghans for her grandchildren.

Most of all, Arlene loved her family. She treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always enjoyed spending time with them and attending their events. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Arlene will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Henry Nelson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children, Harlan (Virginia) Nelson, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Dennis Nelson, of Cape Coral, Florida, Donna Nelson, of Carson City, Nevada, Steven Nelson, of Overland Park, Kansas City, Missouri, and Eric Nelson, of Pella, Iowa; her grandchildren: Angelica Nelson, of Prescott, Arizona, Jeniffer Browning, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Shaun Kennedy, of Carson City, Nevada, Henry Nelson, of Overland Park, Kansas, Paige Schmit, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Tanna Nelson, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Samuel Nelson, of Ankeny, Iowa; and her great-grandchild, Anne Schmit, of West Des Moines, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Richard Nelson; her brother, Marion (Helen) Vanderby; her sisters, Hilda (Ott) Weiland, Louise Swanson, and Theresa (Everett) Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 26, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
