Lorene Liesveld
June 17, 1920 - June 1, 2014

Lorene Liesveld, a long-time resident of Storm Lake, passed away on June 1, 2014.

Lorene Erma Vandewege was born on June 17, 1920, to Cornelius and Jane “Jennie” (TeSelle) Vandewege in Panama, Nebraska. She grew up on a Nebraska farm and always had an exciting and unusual story to tell about farm life. One of her best involved riding a cow to school.

After graduating from Panama High School in 1937, Lorene worked for Elgin for a brief time making watches, but she used her own Elgin watch for years to come.

Lorene married Gerald “Jerry” Liesveld on January 23, 1951. In 1954, they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, because of Jerry’s work as a farm manager. Thereafter, they made their home and raised their family in Storm Lake. A homemaker and the best of moms, Lorene always made sure that her daughters practiced their piano or other instruments and that they had the most creative Halloween costumes, Valentine boxes, or school projects. She was a great sewer and baker especially known for her rhubarb pies.

A member of Lakeside Presbyterian church, Lorene served on many committees and volunteered countless hours as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and circle/UPW member. She could be counted on to bring a dessert or casserole for any event. She greatly valued her faith and knew many Bible verses and hymns by heart. She truly reflected her faith in her daily life.

After her daughters had grown, Lorene worked in the Storm Lake Middle School cafeteria as a cook. She loved the kids and enjoyed the camaraderie with co-workers. She spent her retirement years enjoying her home by the lake, participating in church activities, playing cards with friends, and traveling to New York, the Southwest, or Iowa City to visit her children and beloved grandchildren.

Her surviving loved ones include her husband, Jerry; her daughters, Dr. Jane Liesveld, and her husband, Dr. Deepak Sahasrabudhe, of Rochester, New York, Dr. Judy Liesveld, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Dr. Jill Liesveld, of Coralville, Iowa; her grandchildren who adored her, Kieran and Peter Sahasrabudhe, Jared Dooley, and Joy Liesveld; and one dear sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Stanley Scheevel, of Greenleafton, Minnesota, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

We wish to express our gratitude to our Dad for taking care of Mom for so many years; to Teresa Miller for years of kindness and compassionate care; to Dr. Daniels and the Buena Vista Hospital Hospice team; and also to Mom and Dad’s incredibly supportive and thoughtful neighbors from the Geneseo St./Lakeshore Dr. block through the years.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Lois; and her brothers, Merlin and Iven Vandewege.

And the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Graveside Service: 10:30 a.m., June 07, 2014, at Holland Cemetery in Holland, Nebraska.
