Regina A. Laird
January 17, 1917 - May 29, 2014

Regina A. Laird, age 97, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at her home of sixty years in Storm Lake.

Regina Ann Spencer, a daughter of Howard and Eva (Bilger) Spencer, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on January 17, 1917. She lived her youth in Omaha and began her education at Center Park School. In 1934, she graduated from Omaha’s North High School.

On June 22, 1940, Regina married Delbert L. Laird at the Center Park Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Linda Jean, Cynthia Jane, and Douglas Spencer. Regina supported Delbert during World War II while he served his country in the United States Navy. In November, 1949, the Lairds came to make their home in Storm Lake. There, they began their business partnership, Thompson & Laird Moving and Storage Company, which they owned and operated with their best friend, Claude Thompson. Regina served as vice-president and business manager for the company.

A member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Regina served as an Elder, Clerk of the Session, Circle leader, and President of United Presbyterian Women (UPW). She also participated in P.E.O., the Buena Vista County Democrats, the sewing club, and CALEOMAZ. As part of the Community Orchestra Class, she enjoyed learning to play the violin. Moreover, she shared her love of learning by teaching adults to read and ESL students to understand American idioms and figurative language.

Regina’s life is honored and celebrated by her family which includes her children: Linda Laird, of Norwalk, Iowa, Cynthia (Don) Maxey, of Memphis, Tennessee, and Douglas (Christine) Laird, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; her grandchildren: Mike (Gwen) Ahrens, of Parker, Colorado, Dan (Barb) Ahrens, of Waukee, Iowa, Nate (Julie) Ahrens, of Longmont, Colorado, Katherine (David) Wolford, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Julia (Aaron) Cheney, of Olathe, Kansas, Matt (Samantha) Gordon, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Craig (Stephanie) Maxey, of Houston, Texas, Matthew Laird, of Silicon Valley, California, and MaKenna, Spencer, and Sydney Laird, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and her great grandchildren: Ashley and Sarah Ahrens, of Longmont, Colorado, Elizabeth and Topher Ahrens, of Parker, Colorado, Melissa and Nichole Cheney, of Olathe, Kansas, and Caroline, Emma Kate, and Turner Maxey, of Houston, Texas; as well as other extended family members and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Del Laird; her parents, Howard and Eva (Bilger) Spencer; and two sisters, Geraldine White and Marilyn Peterson.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 6, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the family present the entire time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
