Edgar Williams Ehlers
May 28, 1931 - September 12, 2013

Storm Lake, Iowa

Edgar Ehlers, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, was called to his heavenly home on September 12, 2013.

Edgar was born in Storm Lake on May 28, 1931, to Paul and Amanda (Ripke) Ehlers. Baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Grant Township, he attended grade school at Zion Lutheran School and later graduated from Albert City High School. In1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served through 1955. Very proud of his service on board the battleship USS Iowa, he worked in Damage Control as a carpenter during the Korean War.

On January 19, 1958, Edgar married Marcella Nehring at Zion Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Brent (Carol) Ehlers, of Storm Lake, Roxann (Ron) Buenger, of Aurelia, Wendy (Paul) Brisbois, of Des Moines, Kendra (Richard) Gordon, also of Des Moines, and Troy (Lisa) Ehlers, of Ames.

After returning from his time in the Navy, Edgar became a crop and livestock farmer on the family century farm, an occupation he followed until he retired. A life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served in many capacities including as a member of the board of Christian education, a trustee, and an elder. When time allowed, he enjoyed working in his wood shop where he created many special wooden pieces for his children and grandchildren. He, also, liked playing golf with family and friends. With Marcella, he played in two-ball tournaments, and later, he joined the men's senior league. On September 11, 2001, he triumphed, scoring a hole in one. An avid collector of logo golf balls, he displayed them in the cases he had built.

In addition to his children and their spouses, Edgar is survived by six grandchildren, his pride and joy: Austin and Anna Marie Ehlers, Olivia and Elam Brisbois, and Claire and Chase Gordon. He is also survived by his brother, Dwayne (Phyllis) Ehlers, of Alta; and his brother-in-law, Nate McKenna, of Storm Lake, along with a number of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Edgar was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella, in 2010; his parents; his sister, Eldora Zadow; his two brothers, Gordon and Orville; his parents-in-law, Henry and Hulda Nehring; several brothers- and sisters-in-laws; and two nephews.
