Alvina Manska, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on August 14, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Alvina Mae Evans was born on January 7, 1920, in Linn Grove, Iowa, the daughter of George and Dora (Evans) Evans. She attended grade school in Linn Grove and graduated from Linn Grove High School in 1938. Next, she attended UNI Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning her diploma in Elementary Education. After a few years of teaching, she returned to college at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, to finish a four year degree in Education in 1957.
Baptized as a child and confirmed at the Linn Grove Presbyterian Church, she currently belonged to the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. A long time choir member at her church, she was also active in the UMW.
On August 7, 1955, Alvina married Ray D. Manska at the Linn Grove Presbyterian Church.
Over the years, Alvina participated in P.E.O., the Cosmopolitan Club, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Sewing Club, and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed taking bus trips to Branson, Missouri, Texas, and California as well as attending the school events, graduations, and weddings of her nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Additionally, after having taught 1st grade for over forty years, Alvina enjoyed many hours of getting together with other retired teachers.
Those left to cherish Alvina’s memory include her nieces: Sara (Steve) Balm, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Mary (Mike) Pedersen, of Alta, Iowa; her nephew, Dave Evans, of Des Moines, Iowa; her great nieces: Angie (Jeremy) Ahlgren, Alisa (Ben) Oliver, Leah (Tyler) Harms, and Carly Flaws; her great nephews: Adam Pedersen, Aaron Balm, and Ryan Evans; three great-great nieces; and one great-great nephew; as well as many other friends.
Alvina is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Manska; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Rae and June Evans and Don and Gretchen Evans.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., August 19, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation: 4:00-6:00 p.m., August 18, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: August 19, 2013, at the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove, Iowa.
