Ila E. Lee, age 99, of Alta, passed away on Thursday, August 01, 2013, at the Israel Family Hospice House of Ames.
Ila Estelle Gulbranson was born on April 12, 1914, in Alta, the daughter of Carl G. and Addie Gulbranson. She attended school in Alta and graduated from Alta High School in May of 1932.
Ila graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Chicago in 1937 and worked as a registered nurse in Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas, and Iowa. She also taught and supervised in nursing schools in Minnesota and Kansas and worked for Dr. R.P. Noble in Alta and at the Alta Memorial Hospital.
On April 4, 1946, Ila married Gunerius Allan Lee of Roseau, Minnesota, with Reverend Dale officiating at the Methodist Parsonage in Alta. To this union, four children were born, Douglas, Linda, Donna, and Gary.
Ila enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved teaching Sunday school and Bible school as well as spending time with her church friends at the United Methodist Church of Alta. There, she served as Sunday school superintendent and as a member of the official board. She also belonged to the WSCS, the UMW, and the Susannah Wesley Circle. A thirty-year cancer survivor, she also participated in the community as a band mother, 4-H Leader, Scout Leader, a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Nokomis and Golf Club. She enjoyed traveling to Singapore, the Philippines, and England to visit her daughter.
Ila was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, G. Allan Lee; a sister, Ava Post; a brother, John Lee Gulbranson; and a brother-in-law, L. Roy Post.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Doug Lee (Carol Edwards), of Knoxville, Tennessee, Linda Schultz (Richard), of Roland, Iowa, Donna Barlow, of Aloha, Oregon, and Gary Lee, of Des Moines, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Tom (Erin) Schultz, of Ames, Iowa, Anna Andrews (Dion), of Ames, Iowa, Nicholas Schultz, of Ankeny, Iowa, Peter Schultz, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Richard Lee (Patricia), of Knoxville, Tennessee, Kirsten Sewell, (Chris) of Knoxville, Tennessee, James Barlow (Kelly), of Aloha, Oregon, Heidi Sinkovich (Brett), of Ventura, California, Amy Barlow, of Portland, Oregon, Sean Lee, of Grimes, Iowa, and Jodi Lee (Phil), of Windsor Heights, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Alexander Dalpoggetto, Coraline, Bennett, Alyssa, and Hannah Lee, and Rylan Schultz.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 06, 2013, at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church of Alta with the Rev. David A. Arulnathan officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta. A visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church.
