Leona M. Gibbons
March 18, 1923 - March 23, 2013Rembrandt
Leona Mathilda Gibbons was born on March 18, 1923, to Justus and Ida (Anderson) Gustafson on the home place in Laurens, Iowa. Baptized at Mission Covenant Church in Albert City, Iowa, and confirmed there as well on August 2, 1936, she attended and graduated from Laurens High School.
Leona married Donald Lee Gibbons on August 18, 1944, at Mission Covenant Church. To this union four children were born, Donald, Jr., Annette, Rebecca, and Jeffrey.
Leona and Donald farmed north of Rembrandt until 1960 when they moved into Rembrandt. In 1971, they opened the Rembrandt Food Center which they ran for many years. Leona also worked part time for the Rembrandt Diner.
Leona enjoyed spending time with family and friends. An avid seamstress, she made many clothes for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also loved to quilt and sew with her embroidery machine. She made beautiful embroidered towels. In addition, she loved cooking and baking, always making sure that everyone had enough to eat and that she had an abundant supply of goodies in the freezer. Leona especially loved her coffee club that met on Mondays and Thursdays which she enjoyed hosting on some of those Thursdays. Most of all, however, she loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents; her brothers, Earl, Lowell, and DeWayne Gustafson; and her in-laws, Bill and Helen Gibbons.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Don Gibbons, Jr., and his wife, Kris, of Stockton, Missouri, Annette Hogrefe, and her husband, Larry, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Becky Christensen, and her husband, Dewey, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jeff, and his fiancée, Dee, of Arnolds Park, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Dawn Baker, Jennifer Whetstone, Cory Christensen, Jason Gibbons, Kirby Hogrefe, Wendy Christensen, Kari Swanson, Mandy Kuker, and Jessica Watson; sixteen great-grandchildren, Josh, Toby, Sarah, Bailey, Dillon, Maja, Caleb, Kolby, Kelsey, Mia, Crew, Macie, Anniston, Nash, Channing, and Madden; her sister, Ethel Diercks; and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Gustafson, Joyce Rowlet, Ardis Gustafson, Bill and Gail Gibbons, and Roy and Janice Johnson; as well as many other relatives and friends.
