March 22, 1928 - March 23, 2013

Helen M. Fredericksen, age 85, of Cherokee, and formerly of Newell, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013, just one day after her 85th birthday at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee.

Helen Marie (Wetherell) Fredericksen, the daughter of Ralph and Ila (Claybaugh) Wetherell, was born in Storm Lake on March 22, 1928. She attended school in Newell and Sulphur Springs. After her children were older, she graduated from nursing school and worked as an LPN in the hospital and the nursing homes.

Helen enjoyed her days working as a nurse as well as cooking, quilting, and playing cards with the 500 Club in Newell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Clifford (and Ruby), Charles “Chuck”, Richard “Dick,” Burton “Butch” (and Marilyn), Glenn (and Noreen), and Paul; five sisters, Marge (Dale) Dicks, Carol Culp, Darlene Wetherell, Mary Katherine Wetherell, and Phyllis (Darold) Brown; and a brother-in-law, Larry Hervey.

She is survived by her son, Paul Fredericksen, Jr., and his wife, Jan, of Ankeny; her daughter, Judy Fredericksen, of Cherokee; five grandchildren, Kara (Don) Toedtli, Scott Ellwanger, Brandon (Nicole) Fredericksen, Nicole (Ken) Giddens, and Matt (Lindsey) Fredericksen; four great-grandchildren, Samantha, Sophia, Gavin, and Ashley; her siblings, Dale (Rose) Wetherell, Bill (Connie) Wetherell, Dennis (Fay) Wetherell, Bernice (Harold) Heschke, Sharron-Hawkins-Hervey, and Shirley (George) Francis; and her sisters-in-law, Carol, Sophie, and Erla Wetherell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many special friends.

As she wished, Helen's body will be cremated, and her family is planning private services at a later date. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at 203 S. 9th St., Cherokee, Iowa, 51012.
