Marion E. Martin, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Marion was born on February 27, 1932, in Hancock, Iowa, the son of Wayne and Edna (Kobs) Martin. Baptized on September 18, 1933, in Hancock, he was later confirmed on December 29, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.
While he was growing up, his family moved several times. He attended Lewis Consolidated, country school at Shelby, country school at Lincoln Lee, and then graduated from Albert City High School in 1950.
On November 4, 1952, Marion entered the United States Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He served his country with the 196th Infantry during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of CPL (T). Honorably discharged on October 13, 1954, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
On December 9, 1956, Marion married Norene Ripke at Zion Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with three children: Brenda, Denise, and Brian.
Marion was a member of the American Legion in Varina and Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.
A life-time farmer, Marion raised livestock. He also worked a few years for Walnut Grove in Storm Lake. He loved dancing, card clubs, and Hawkeye basketball. In his spare time, he enjoyed trips to Branson and traveling out west. He loved attending his granddaughter’s band and orchestra concerts and piano recitals along with his grandson’s football games and track meets. He treasured spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Norene Martin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Brenda (Mick) Koeppe and Brian (Sandy) Martin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Angela (Ryan) Weitzel, of Sac City, Iowa, and Justin (Jennifer) Koeppe, of Ankeny, Iowa; his great grandchild, Colin Koeppe, of Ankeny, Iowa; his brother, Dale (Joan) Martin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sisters: Joan (Gilbert) Phillips, of Des Moines, Iowa, Joyce Hoskins, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Elaine (Gerald) Carlson, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and his brother and sister-in-law, Melvin (Judy) Ripke, of Rembrandt, Iowa; as well as extended family and friends.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Edna Martin; his daughter, Denise Martin; and his parents-in-law, Raymond and Marie Ripke.
Visitation: 4:00-7:00 p.m., February 14, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., February 15, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: February 15, 2013, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa, with full military rites.
