Marian Tallman
September 24, 1914 - December 14, 2012Marian Elaine (Shellenberger) Tallman, the daughter of William and Loretta (Smith) Shellenberger, was born on September 24, 1914, at Nemaha, Iowa. She spent her childhood primarily in Early, Iowa, where she graduated from Sacred Heart High School. After earning her teaching certificate from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, she spent five years teaching in a one-room school near Nemaha.
On January 8, 1940, she married Joseph A. Tallman, Sr. They made their home in Boone, Iowa. Joe soon went off to serve his country, and as a military wife, Marian lived in Ft. Claiborne, Louisiana, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Muskogee, Oklahoma. They later moved in Des Moines, Iowa, before settling in Cherokee.
A devoted housewife and mother to their eight children, Marian enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening, reading, and watching CNN. After Joe passed away on February 24, 1976, Marian continued living at home in Cherokee until she moved to her current apartment at Otsego Place, an assisted living home in Storm Lake. Following a brief illness, she passed away at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake on Friday, December 14, 2012, at the age of 98.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; one son, William; a granddaughter, Carrie; a great-granddaughter, Maggie; five sisters, Marie Wallisch, Winifred Gray, Helen Elbert, Joan Fleming, and Clarice Scott; and a brother, Robert Shellenberger.
Her memory will always be cherished by her children and their families: Ellen Tallman, of Granger, Iowa, Joseph (Sue) Tallman, Jr., of Newark, Deleware, Anne (Richard) Johnston, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Mary Lou (Donald) Krukow, of Lakeville, Minnesota, Gerald (Connie) Tallman, of Lake Sherwood, Missouri, Steven (Joan) Tallman, of Granger, Iowa, and David Tallman, of Cherokee; a daughter-in-law, Julie (Mrs. William) Tallman, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; three sisters, Clela Miller, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Rose Elbert, of Mankato, Minnesota, and Paula Quinn, of Minnetonka, Minnesota; nineteen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
