Marvin "Chris" Christensen
January 14, 1914 - November 27, 2012

Marvin "Chris" Christensen, age 98, of Pocahontas, formerly of Gilmore City, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Pocahontas Manor in Pocahontas.

Marvin Christensen was born on January 15, 1914, in Callender, the son of Edward and Marie (Hansen) Christensen. He graduated from Varina High School and then put himself through college. After graduating from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, he continued his education at Iowa State University earning a B. S. in Vocational Agriculture. He, then, attended Drake University completing a Master’s Degree in Education. Subsequently, he taught various grades in many locations. While teaching in Brook, he met his wife, Lucille.

Marvin married Lucille Saathoff at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church on September 19, 1942. He worked for the County Agriculture Extension Service in Thompson and then operated a hatchery in Washington. In 1950, he and Lucille settled in Gilmore City where he taught vocational agriculture. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He loved learning new things. For over thirty years, he operated a HAM radio, WDØDCF. He especially enjoyed gardening, even tending a garden at his home until 2010 when he and Lucy moved to Arlington Place in Pocahontas.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Lucille, of Pocahontas; his daughters, Marcia (Carl) Porter, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Judy (Larry) Skibsted, of Galva; six grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Gardner, of Norwalk.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Edgar and Larry; his brothers, John, Sophus, Carl, and John Pershing Christensen; his sisters, Edith Robins, Agnes Anderson, and Eva Lou Jensen; a grandson, James Porter, and an infant great-granddaughter, Lucy Porter.

Funeral Services were Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Gilmore City with Rev. Charles Luers officiating.
Graveside services and burial were held at the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery.
The Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas handled the arrangements.
