Elwood J. Loving
January 2, 1920 - November 5, 2012Elwood Loving died on November 5, 2012, at the Pleasant View Nursing home where he resided for the last eleven months.
Elwood John Albin Loving was born on January 2, 1920, on a farm near Albert City, Iowa, to Elmer and Esther Loving. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. After completing high school at Albert City, he attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa, earning a business administration degree in 1940. Shortly after college, he joined the army and proudly served his country from 1941 – 1945.
On January 6, 1952, Elwood married Edna Vesgaard Madson at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. With this union, they created a family which included Duane H. Madson, Jr., Edna’s eight year old son at the time of their wedding. Soon four more children were born, Kurt, Debra, DeeAnn, and Scott. Together, Elwood and Edna farmed near Albert City, Iowa, until they retired in 1985 when they moved to their home in Albert City.
A dedicated farmer, Elwood took great pleasure in working the land. After retiring, he and Edna enjoyed spending time with family, wintering in Arizona, visiting Sweden, and researching genealogy. A leader and an active member in the community, Elwood served on many boards.
Elwood was preceded in death by Edna, his first wife of forty-four years, and Verna, his second wife of eight years; his parents, Elmer and Esther Loving, his sister, Lorraine Bloom; his brother, Jerome Loving, and a grandson, Mike Madson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Duane (Sherryl) Madson, of Albert City, Iowa, Kurt (T.C.) Loving, of Humboldt, Iowa, Debra (Bill) Brackey, of Green Valley, Arizona, DeeAnn (Stan) Cotton, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Scott (Teresa) Loving, of Albert City, Iowa; his grandchildren, Karna (Kirby) Eddie, of Adel, Iowa, Steve (Denise) Madson, of LaVista, Nebraska, Daniel Loving, of Humboldt Iowa, Maren Loving, of Wheaton, Illinois, AnnaLise (Tom) Christenson, of Humboldt, Iowa, Kristen (Ernie) Alvarez, of Kailua, Hawaii, James Brackey, of Tucson, Arizona, Ali Brackey, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Brooke (Eric) Thompson, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Jeff Loving, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and seven great grandchildren, Trae & Chase Eddie, Cole and Clay Madson, Ernie (Robbie) and Evan Alvarez, Braelyn Thompson, and Wyatt Christenson.
A loving, hardworking, conservative man, Elwood always looked at life positively and as a blessing.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City with full military rites by the Albert City American Legion. Visitation will take place Wednesday, November 7, 2012, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
