September 21, 1925 - October 11, 2012

Beata "Bea" Bailey, age 87, of Marathon, Iowa, died Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Beata Leanore Monkelien, the daughter of John M. and Edna (Johnson) Monkelien, was born in Fonda, Iowa, on September 21, 1925. Bea lived her youth in Pocahontas County where she began her education in a country school before graduating from Pocahontas High School. She continued her higher education at the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. Subsequently, she taught country school for two years at Grant Township #8 and then one year at Colfax Township #1.

On August 30, 1946, Bea married James W. Bailey at Elfsborg Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. They were blessed with eight children: Lynn, Neil, Beverly, Barbara, Wayne, Becky, Bonnie, and Daniel. Farming their entire lives, they, at one time or another, resided in the Ayrshire, Cylinder, and Marathon areas. A loving, hardworking, and devoted housewife and mother, she also worked alongside Jim helping with the farming chores.

A longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church at Marathon, Bea participated in the church circle and sang in the church choir. Having a beautiful voice, she sang many solos. She was also a member of the Friendship Club for many years. In addition, Bea loved horses. An accomplished horse woman, she will be remembered as a lady who enjoyed riding and showing her horses. She participated in the Threshermen’s activities, and she enjoyed quilting and collecting and refinishing antiques.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she loved each and every one of them very much. Indeed, her life will always be cherished and celebrated by her family which includes her children: Lynn Bailey, of Marathon, Iowa, Neil (Kay) Bailey, of Elizabeth, Illinois, Bev (Mike) McConeghey, of Fairfield, Iowa, Wayne Bailey, of Ayrshire, Iowa, Becky (Doug) Baker, of Laurens, Iowa, Bonnie Black, of Laurens, Iowa, and Dan (Tracey) Bailey, of Rembrandt, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren: Brian, Brent, Bradley, Jeffrey, Christopher, Ian, William, Aaron, Clinton, Laine, Lance, Heidi, Austin, Joshua, Ryan, Braeden, and Camden; and twelve great grandchildren; as well as nieces; nephews; other extended family members; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim, on April 28, 2012; her daughter, Barbara, in infancy; her son-in-law, Robert Black; two brothers, Hubert and James; and one sister, Arline.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 14, 2012, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
