Vera L. Wood, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the North Lake Manor in Storm Lake.

Vera Leone (Birch) Wood was born on the family farm of Cleghorn, Iowa, on October 1, 1921, to William Hammond and Olive Pearl (Pooley) Birch.

Vera graduated from Cleghorn High School and attended Buena Vista College for two and a half years (1945). From 1944-1948, she taught grade school at Glidden, Schaller, and Alton.

On December 10, 1950, she married Gerald Wood from Storm Lake at the Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. After their honeymoon, they made their home south of Storm Lake where Gerald lived. The loving parents of two children, William Verne and Marlys Jane, Vera and Gerald had a wonderful fifty-six years together living on the farm.

An active member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church since 1951, Vera was also a member of the Camera Club, the Pilgrim Missionary, the Hayes Homemakers, the Izaak Walton League, and the Coin Club. She received both fifty and sixty year college awards from Buena Vista College.

She had many hobbies which included playing the piano by ear from the age of eight, doing embroidery, and making latch hook rugs. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, canning, reading puzzle books, and making picture albums.

Gerald and Vera went on several family trips and bus trips sponsored by Citizens National Bank.

Vera especially enjoyed celebrating the holidays. At Christmas time, she would bake her Saffron bread and fruit ball cookies as well as make special decorations.

Friends and family will mostly remember her for her love of music and giving nature, always willing to share food and craftwork.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: William Verne (Barbara) Wood, of Galva, Iowa, and Marlys Wood, of Storm Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren: Eric (Angie) Wood, Kevin (Jennifer) Wood, and Kelly Diischer; six great grandchildren: Julie, Zachary, Adam, Nathan, Lidia, and Colton; one sister, Audrey Curry, of Chico, California; a sister-in-law, Barbara Birch, of Phoenix, Arizona; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Wood, of Sioux City, Iowa; as well as nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents; her brothers: Milo Birch and Stanley Birch; her sisters: Pearl McKenna, Lois Hazen, Alta Wilcox, and Berniece Johnson; her brothers-in-law: Maurice Hazen, Jim Wilcox, Clinton Johnson, Jerry Curry, and a sister-in-law, Margaret Birch.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
