Karen Sump, age 69, of Oakdale, Minnesota, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died October 3, 2012, in Oakdale.

Karen was born on June 24, 1943, in Luzerne, Iowa. Baptized in 1943 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she was later adopted by Martin and Mathilda (Buchholz) Sump and joined by a brother, Merle, and sister, Shirley. She was confirmed in her faith in 1957.

Growing up, Karen attended the first through the eighth grades at Zion Lutheran School in rural Storm Lake. In 1961, she graduated from Albert City-Truesdale High school. While attending high school, she was a cheerleader and the Homecoming Queen. Following high school graduation, she attended Mankato Commercial College where she graduated in 1962.

Karen had an extensive doll collection. A member of Eastern Heights Lutheran Church, she enjoyed singing in the church choir. A longtime accountant for 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota, she retired in June of 2002.

Very proud of her many nieces and nephews, Karen valued family above all else. Those left to cherish her memory include her biological sister, Dorene Corbin; her biological brother, Gerald Martinsen; her sister-in-law, Joyce (Ron) Nehring; her nieces: Dawn Betsill, Melissa Cerda, Tracey Denney, Candace Sump, and Sue Schmidt; and her great-nieces and nephews: Haillee, Hannah, Bianca, and Eric Cerda, Savannah Betsill, Jason and Dustin Denney, Justin and Adrianna Schmidt; as well as extended family and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Mathilda; her brother, Merle Sump; and her biological brother, Richard Jahde; her sister, Shirley Easley; her nephew, Craig Sump; and her niece, Tonya Sump.

Visitation: 9:30 a.m., October 08, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., October 08, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: October 08, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storm Lake, Iowa.
