Orlen W. Rohlfsen, age 79, of Newell, Iowa, died September 26, 2012, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Orlen Walter Rohlfsen was born on November 16, 1932, in Marcus, Iowa, the son of Orville and Clara Beerman Rohlfsen. He was baptized and confirmed in Germantown, Iowa.
Growing up, he attended Paullina High School and then South Dakota State University for a short period.
In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Navy and spent four years in the Mediterranean area until he was honorably discharged in 1954.
On April 15, 1956, Orlen married Phyllis Sievers at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell. They were blessed with two children, Brad and Gail.
Very active in his community, Orlen served as the President of the Newell Providence School Board, commander of the American Legion, Golf President, and President of the Buena Vista County Democrats. He also served on the German Mutual Insurance Board for nine years. A faithful member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, he served his church as chairman, secretary, trustee, and elder. Having a great love of music, he sang in the church choir during Sunday worship services and for many funerals and weddings as well.
Orlen loved farming and farmed for thirty years. After retiring from farming, he worked a rural mail carrier for fifteen years. He greatly enjoyed gardening, golfing, and attending Newell-Fonda events. He loved his family and treasured spending time with them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of fifty-six years, Phyllis Rohlfsen, of Newell, Iowa; his son, Brad (Darlene) Rohlfsen, of Omaha, Nebraska; his daughter, Gail (David) Gregory, of Littleton, Colorado; five grandchildren: Rae, Cory, and Tyler Rohlfsen and Eric and Jakeb Gregory as well as extended family members and friends.
Orlen was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Clara Rohlfsen; his sister, Elaine Kischer; his brothers, Laverne and Don Rohlfsen; and his parents-in-law, William and Dora Sievers.
Visitation: 4:00-8:00 p.m., September 28, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., September 29, 2012, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Interment: September 29, 2012, at the Newell Cemetery in Newell, Iowa.
