Darrell Dean McConkey, age 72, of Storm Lake, died Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Darrell Dean McConkey was born on July 25, 1940, in Storm Lake, the son of Carl and Lydia Grieme McConkey. Baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on August 18, 1940, his sponsors were Ruby Steig and A. J. Schuler. He was later confirmed on June 13, 1954.

Growing up, Darrell attended school in Sulphur Springs, graduating from Sulphur Springs Providence Consolidated School in 1958.

On March 22, 1972, Darrell married Sharon Marie Peterson in Kaw City, Oklahoma. Together they raised three children: Roxanne, Denise, and Stacey.

A member of 4-H and FFA while in school, Darrell enjoyed showing calves for 4-H. Later on in life, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. In his spare time, Darrell loved watching television, especially the Westerns or the Iowa Pickers. He treasured his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish Darrell’s memory include his wife, Sharon McConkey, of Storm Lake; his children: Roxanne (Gary) Eibergen, of Granton, Wisconsin, Denise (David) Allen, of Randleman, North Carolina, and Stacey (Theresa) McConkey, of Granton, Wisconsin; his grandchildren: Connie and Kevin Eibergen, of Granton, Wisconsin, Noah, Maya, and Brady McConkey, also of Granton, Wisconsin, and Ashley and Dalton Allen, of Randleman, North Carolina; his brother, Darwin (Lois) McConkey, of Alta; his sisters: Shirley (Don) Elliott, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Marlene (Bruce) Terrillion, of Papillion, Nebraska; and his brother-in-law, Bill Peterson, of Maurice; as well as extended family members and friends.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Darlene McConkey; his nephew, Scott McConkey; his father- and mother-in-law; and his sisters-in-law, Rose Belle and Alice.
