In 1939, he graduated from Correctionville High School. After graduation, he went to work for the Council Oak Grocery Chain in Rockwell City.

A World War II Veteran, DeWitt enlisted in the United States Navy in January of 1941. He attended the University of Houston where he earned an M/2C Degree. He, then, served aboard ship until his honorable discharge in October of 1945.

After his honorable discharge, he worked for Wilbur Hussey Heating Company as a metal smith. In May of 1977, he retired from the post office to work full-time at their business, the Rustic shop, located just north of the Vista Theatre in downtown Storm Lake. They ran it until their retirement in 1993 when their daughter, Wendie, took over the business.
