Alice Garrels
January 25, 1916 - September 6, 2012

Alice Ruby Garrels, age 96, of Newell, formerly of Lake View, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Alice was born on January 25, 1916, in Lake View, to Fred Otto and Carrie Sauter Ellwanger. She attended Sac County Country Schools and graduated from Lake View High School. Continuing her education, she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls.

On June 2, 1940, Alice married Willard H. Garrels at the Congregational Church in Lake View. After launching several successful businesses throughout Northwest Iowa, they moved to Newell where she and Willard owned and operated Garrels Real Estate. Alice worked alongside her husband for many years, retiring in 1994. She blessed her family with many handmade crocheted items and her good cooking. A devoted and loving wife, sister, aunt, and friend, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, on November 20, 2006, and by her parents, Fred and Carrie Ellwanger. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her sisters: June Bowers, of Storm Lake, and Joyce Patten, of Perry; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 13th, 2012, at Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View with Rev. Randy Russom officiating. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Lake View is in charge of arrangements.
