Sgt. Joshua James Ehlers, age 22, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and formerly of Albert City, Iowa, passed away August 15, 2012, at his home in Clarksville.

Joshua James Ehlers was born on July 31, 1990, in Tucson, Arizona. He was adopted by Steve and Betty Ehlers of Newell, Iowa, on May 18, 1998. Homeschooled through high school, he received his diploma in 2008.

Joshua joined the United States Army in 2008, serving his country faithfully until this death. Trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he was deployed with the 1/41 Field Artillery Unit from Fort Steward, Georgia, serving honorably for one year in Iraq. Currently stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in the 101st Airborne MEDDAC Division, he worked in the Army Community Hospital in the emergency room. Joshua was very professional, diligent, and a highly respected medic.

On May 5, 2011, Joshua married Lauren Smith in Hinesville, Georgia. A faithful and devoted husband and father, he loved his family very much. He adored his two little girls. The week before his death, Joshua and the entire Ehlers family enjoyed vacationing together in Orlando, Florida. Those who knew him will also remember him as an exceptionally avid reader.

Joshua is survived by his wife, Lauren, and his daughters: Isabella and Jamie, of Clarksville, Tennessee; his parents: Steve and Betty Ehlers, of Newell, Iowa; his brothers and sisters: Bethany (Romulus) Stefanut, of Chicago, Illinois, Caleb (Amy) Ehlers, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Andrew (Jessica) Ehlers, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Britta Ehlers and Madison Ehlers, both of Newell, Iowa; his nieces and nephew: Annika and Timaeus Stefanut and Sophia Ehlers; his grandmother, Doris Skog, of Albert City, Iowa; and his aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family as well as co-workers and many friends. He also leaves his special friends: Reid and Dory Prins and their family to mourn his loss.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Harvey Skog, and his paternal grandparents, Helmuth and Rosella Ehlers.

His wife writes: “The heat of battle and the birth of his children deepened Joshua’s faith and dependence on God. He came to realize the nearness of God wherever he went. Not a day went by without his praying with his wife and children.”

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 23, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City.
