Max E. Ireland, age 100, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Max was born January 8, 1912, in rural Malvern, Iowa, the son of Aden and Ethel Antrim Ireland. Growing up, he attended grade school in Malvern, later graduating from Malvern High School in 1929. Following high school graduation, he worked for three years before attending Creighton University from 1932-34 where he majored in Pharmacy. Max took the state boards and became a registered pharmacist on June 7, 1934.
On September 30, 1934, Max married Helen Louise Marshall in Malvern. They were blessed with three children: Lois, Linda, and Douglas.
In 1940, Max and Helen moved to Storm Lake where he began working for Rickman Drug. He bought the store in 1947 and renamed it Ireland Rexall Drug, which he owned and operated until he retired in 1977. As a pharmacist, he received the Bowl of Hygenia Award in 1965. He was proud to have mentored many young pharmacy students throughout his career.
A member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Max taught Sunday school and served on many church boards and committees. Very involved in his community, he also served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the HyNoon Kiwanis, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Masonic Lodge. In addition, he served on the school board for nine years and as a Boy Scout leader. Furthermore, he joined the Buena Vista Historical Society, the Izaak Walton League, the United Commercial Travelers, and the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association.
After Helen passed away on July 28, 1988, in Storm Lake, Max attended his fiftieth class reunion in Adair, Iowa, as an honored guest. There, he met Margaret DeFore, whom he married on March 8, 1990, at the Witter Chapel of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake.
In his spare time, Max enjoyed genealogy research and furniture refinishing as well as hunting and fishing. He loved playing bridge with family and friends and was a member of the Gourmet Club. Max treasured spending time with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Margaret Ireland, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Lois (Philip) Miller, of Waterloo, Iowa, Linda (James) Anderson, of Boone, Iowa, and Douglas (Phyllis) Ireland, of West Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Teresa (Blaine) Martin, of Le Mars, Iowa, Timothy Anderson, of Boone, Iowa, Cynthia Anderson, also of Boone, Iowa, Michelle (Gary) Burns, of Chicago, Illinois, Jeffrey Ireland, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Juli (Steve) Agan, of Peru, Iowa, and Jessica Ireland, of West Des Moines, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Christine Hagerty, Lindsay Martin, Madeline Hagerty, Madison Martin, Colton Anderson, Chase Anderson, Paityn Anderson, Kaelan Ireland, and Kaleigh Ireland; as well his step son, John DeFore; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Max was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen; his sisters and their spouses: Helen (Clarence) Frink and Doris (Joe) Reddout; and several nephews.
Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m. August 03, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., August 04, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
