Duane "Red" Hoferman
March 14, 1929 - July 16, 2012

Alta

Duane “Red” Hoferman was born on March 14, 1929, in Buena Vista County, the son of Leo and Mamie Schoen Hoferman. He gave his heart to the Lord at 8 years of age. Later, he was baptized and became a member of the Truesdale Assembly of God, which eventually merged with Faith United Assembly of God in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Duane graduated from Alta High School in 1946. In September of 1950, he enlisted in the Navy but was drafted to the Marines. After serving for two years during the Korean War, he returned to the Storm Lake area and was employed with Kallmer Sales for a brief time before finding employment with the Buena Vista Rural Electric Cooperative and the Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative. He worked for the latter until his retirement in 1991.

Duane married Margie Weiland at the Truesdale Assembly of God Church on October 26, 1952. They were blessed with two sons, Le Moine and Keith. For most of their lives, Duane and Margie resided on a farm in rural Alta, but after retiring, they spent three months each winter in Florida.

A member of the Assembly of God Church for fifty-five years, Duane faithfully attended the United Methodist Church of Alta during his last twelve years. He loved serving the Lord. While still a young man at home, we would hurry through his Sunday morning chores so he could go along with his sister and brother when they went to KAYL to perform live music for their church broadcast. For many years, he sang in a quartet and a trio in many different churches and at various social functions. He faithfully served as a deacon for thirty-eight years and taught Sunday school even longer. He also served as a lay minister for many years. Duane, along with his wife, conducted church services at the Buena Vista County Home, later Spectra. After the home closed, they volunteered to assist the Storm Lake ministers by filling in at the nursing homes when the pastors had scheduling conflicts. After serving on Spectra Care Review Committee for many years, Duane received two certificates of appreciation, one from Governor Branstad and one from Governor Vilsack, for his faithful service to others.
