Alberta Heschke
April 26, 1921 - June 24, 2012

Alberta Marie (Sanders) Heschke, the daughter of Lela (Dearth) and Earnest Sanders, was born in Story County, Iowa, on April 26, 1921. When Alberta was eight years old, her family moved to the Newell and Varina areas. After attending the local schools, she went to work as a housekeeper in Newell.

On August 16, 1941, she married Darel Heschke in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They farmed near Alta for many years. Alberta enjoyed working alongside Darel on the farm and took an active role in milking the cows, feeding the hogs, and planting, cultivating, and harvesting the crops. She lovingly cared for her home and their daughters, Leah and Shirley. She loved to cook and enjoyed crocheting, traveling, and fishing. For many years, she taught Sunday school at the Elk Baptist Church in rural Alta.

Alberta passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the Countryside Estates Nursing Home in Cherokee at the age of 91 years, 1 month, 29 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-great-grandson, Kade Alicehouse; a son-in-law, Merlin West; a sister-in-law, Alma Heschke; three brothers-in-law, Ellis Frances, Johnny Heschke, and Bob Heschke; and her mother- and father-in-law, Bessie and Charlie Heschke, as well as other relatives and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Darel, of Cherokee; two daughters, Leah West, of Meriden, and Shirley (Ron) Peterson, of Cherokee; eight grandchildren: Yvonne (Kenny) Dodd and Sharon Nicholson, both of Cherokee, Keith West, of Alta (ex-wife, Pam of Fonda), Ted West, of Cleghorn, Kelly (Michon) West, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Laurie (Ed) Garvin, of Cherokee, Angie (Tracy) Stevenson, of Quimby, and Joe (Jessie) Peterson, of Cherokee; ten great-grandchildren: Stephanie (Jessie Alicehouse) Nicholson, Nicole (John) Gray, Erica Nicolson, Zachary Dodd, Nathan Dodd, Avery West, Tenise Stevenson, Trent Stevenson, Jesica Garvin, and Logan Peterson; three great-great-grandchildren: Braden, Brooklyn, and Ava; and three step great-great-grandchildren: Devin, Zachary, and Rylee.
