Mabel Blanche Millard was born on December 28, 1914, near Alta, the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Wall) Millard. She attended Alta Consolidated School, graduating in 1934. On Mother’s Day, May 10, 1936, Mabel married Milton Johann Hustedt at the bride’s home west of Alta. This union was blessed with three children: Melva, Milton, and Milo.
They resided on a farm southwest of Alta. Mabel’s husband, Milton, passed away May 16, 1954. She continued to live on the farm raising crops and livestock with the help of her family. She loved living on the farm and enjoyed the company of all her animals. Mabel spent many hours playing cards and board games with her grandchildren. At her passing, she had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for seventy-six years. In 2006, she moved to Storm Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton; her sister, Lillian Frantz; her brother, Leslie Millard; her brothers-in-law, Leslie Andersen, Dale Frantz, and John Vring; and her sisters-in-law, Ina Millard, Ione Millard, and Edna Vring.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Melva (Rollen) Winkel, of Alta, Milton (Sheryl) Hustedt, of Sutherland, and Milo (Pat) Hustedt, of Storm Lake; five grandchildren, Brenda (Robert) Wilson, of Sac City, Kristen (Cory) Watts, of Storm Lake, Brent (Becky) Hustedt, of Sutherland, Rachel Hustedt, of Washington D.C., and Jason Hustedt, of Hyattsville, Maryland; and seven great-grandchildren: Brandon Wilson, Danielle Wilson, Abbie Watts, Allison Watts, Lydia Hustedt, Chloe Hustedt, and Greta Hustedt; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
