Lorraine Anderson, age 89, of Marathon, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Helen Lorraine Anderson, daughter of Carl and Edna Taylor Peterson, was born on May 31, 1923. She lived her youth and received her education in Marathon where she was a 1940 graduate of the Marathon High School. Lorraine’s mother died when she was twelve years old, and she accepted the responsibility of nurturing and raising her younger brother, Bud, and taking care of the home. Following her graduation, she worked in Minneapolis for one and a half years.

On November 9, 1943, Lorraine married Donald Anderson. This couple was blessed with four sons: Larry, Richard, Thomas, and Ron. Following Don’s honorable discharge from the army, they began their farming career in 1945. They resided on the farm from 1945 until 1979 when they moved into Marathon. Even though Don lived in town, he remained active in farming until his death in 1998. The Marathon community appreciated the seven years that Donnie and Lorraine took care of the maintenance of the Marathon Park. For many years, Donnie drove school bus, and Lorraine substituted for him. They attended all of the school’s sporting events. “Snowbirds,” they loved spending some of their winters in Arizona as well.

Lorraine was a faithful member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Marathon and remained very active in her community. She took special interest in following college sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing cards, and enjoying family camping trips. Proud of each and every member of her family, especially of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Lorraine loved them dearly.

Lorraine’s family will deeply miss her unconditional love and will always honor and cherish her life. They include her sons: Larry (Shirley) Anderson, of Wymore, Nebraska, Richard (Beverly) Anderson, of Omaha, Nebraska, Thomas (Marsha) Anderson, of Atlantic, Iowa, and Ron (Sheila) Anderson, of Marathon, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jeff, Jeremy, Kyle, Shaun, and Sonya Anderson, Kelly Ellis, Robin Renken, Stacey Boll, and Heather Totten; sixteen great grandchildren; and her brother, Eldon (Bud) Peterson, of Texas; as well as nieces; nephews; other extended family; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donnie; and her brother, LuVerne Peterson.

Lorraine greatly missed Donnie since his death and longed for the day that she would be reunited with him. Frequently, she would remind us, “My favorite day was my first date with Donnie.”

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 21, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place on Friday, July 20, 2012, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
