Raymond "Ray" Kurtz, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
Raymond LaVerne William Kurtz was born September 15, 1919, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Esther (Rentz) Kurtz. He attended school in Estherville, graduating from Estherville High School.
In 1942, Ray entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He proudly served his country on the USS Kitty Hawk, the USS Casablanca, and the USS Hogatt Bay. During his service, Ray received numerous awards and honors. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
On April 20, 1946, Ray married Nadine Elaine Loveland. This union was blessed with three children: Gary, Katherine, and Mary.
Ray worked as a Trooper for the Iowa State Highway Patrol for thirty years. Serving in numerous capacities, he also helped train new troopers. He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. In his spare time, Ray enjoyed woodworking, reading, and working in the garden. More than all else, however, he loved and adored his family and the time they spent together.
Those who will cherish Ray's memory include his daughters: Mary (Kip) Tatman, of Humboldt, Iowa, and Kathy (Mark) Linda, of Waterloo, Iowa; his grandchildren: Sally Linda Edlund, Josie Linda Christopherson, James Linda, Joshua Beekmann, Jennifer Beekmann Foley, Alex Tatman, Rachel Kurtz, and Billy Kurtz; his great grandchildren: Lucia Edlund, Mae Edlund, Theo Christopherson, Astrid Christopherson, Lily Beekmann, Esmeralda Gracia, Elana Mendoza, and Aiden Kurtz; one sister, Esther Marie Ford; four half-sisters: Diana Foster, Louise McCullough, Sharon Godfrey, and Debra Rogne; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and other extended family and many friends.
Preceding Ray in death are his parents; his wife, Nadine Kurtz; his son, Gary Kurtz; four brothers: Kenneth Kurtz, Lloyd Kurtz, Clarence Kurtz, Jr., and Larry Kurtz; and two sisters: Cleo Kurtz Strieffel, and Carol Hatland.
Visitation: 2:00-5:00 p.m., June 17, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m., June 18, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
