Arnold Kjolhede
October 16, 1921 - February 10, 2005

Arnold passed away Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

Arnold C. Kjolhede was born October 16, 1921, in Newell to Christen and Esther (Jensen) Kjolhede. He received his education from Coon Center, Newell, and graduated in 1939 from the Rembrandt school. Arnie was baptized on November 20, 1921, and confirmed on April 4, 1936, both in the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell.

Arnold served his country during WWII, enlisting with the U.S. Marines on September 14, 1942, and taking part in the Pacific Campaigns of Bougainville, BSI, Peleliu, the Palau Islands and Okinawa, and the Ryukyu Islands. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1945.

On March 2, 1947, he married Marian M. Grunig at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. This union was blessed with four children.

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta all of his married life, Arnold served as Sunday School Superintendent for ten years. He also served several terms on the church council and on many other different committees.

Arnold was a Charter Member of the Alta VFW Post 6172 and an active member of the Alta Kiwanis. A seed corn dealer serving as ASC committeeman and reporter, he farmed all of his life. After retiring, Arnie took up golf, a hobby he greatly enjoyed. An avid reader, he also enjoyed crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford and Cyril; two sisters, Agnes Lathrum and Doris Orcutt; and one daughter-in-law, Kathi.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Marian, of Storm Lake; two sons, Luther, and his wife, Veronica, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jeff, and his wife, Laurie, of Alta; two daughters, Candis Lichternberg, and her husband, Joel, of Owings Mills, Maryland, and Jan Keith, and her husband, Terry, of Windsor, Colorado; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald, and his wife, Glenda; three sisters, Lillian, and her husband, Skelly Rystad, Ellen, and her husband Van Parker, and Elano, and her husband Jim Gaffey; one sister-in-law, Bettie Kjolhede; one brother-in-law, Les Grunig, and his wife, Marlene; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Arnold Kjolhede were held Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Ted Eilders officiating. Military rites were provided by VFW Post #6172 of Alta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Handicapped Accessible Addition at Trinity Lutheran Church, Alta.
