May 26, 1914 - April 28, 2012

James W. Bailey, age 97, of Marathon, Iowa, died April 28, 2012, at the Laurens Hovenden Memorial Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Laurens.

James Wilbur Bailey, the son of Clifford and Florence (Morse) Bailey, was born on a farm north of Laurens, Iowa, on May 26, 1914. Jim spent most of his youth in Blackwell, Oklahoma, where he received his education.

Jim served his country with honor in the United States Army during World War II from October 10, 1940, until June 30, 1945. He was awarded a Bronze Star

On August 30, 1946, Jim married Beata L. Monkelien at the Elfsborg Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. They were blessed with eight children: Lynn, Neil, Beverly, Barbara, Wayne, Becky, Bonnie, and Daniel.

Dedicated to farming throughout his life, Jim thoroughly enjoyed raising mules and horses. He also milked many cows on his farm, and he liked going to auctions. His grandchildren have many fond memories of their grandpa teaching them about farming and mechanics.

For a time, Jim also worked at Mefferd Industries in Laurens. Over the years, he and his family resided in Ayrshire, Cylinder, and Marathon. He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church at Marathon.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-five years, Bea, of Marathon, Iowa; his children: Lynn Bailey, of Marathon, Iowa; Neil (Kay) Bailey, of Elizabeth, Illinois, Bev (Mike) McConeghey, of Fairfield, Iowa, Wayne Bailey, of Ayrshire, Iowa, Becky (Doug) Baker, of Laurens, Iowa, Bonnie Black, of Laurens, Iowa, and Dan (Tracey) Bailey, of Rembrandt, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren: Brian, Brent, Bradley, Jeffrey, Christopher, Ian, William, Aaron, Clinton, Laine, Lance, Heidi, Austin, Joshua, Ryan, Braeden, and Camden; and twelve great grandchildren; as well as nieces; nephews; other extended family; and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Barbara; a son-in-law, Robert Black; his siblings: Kenneth Bailey, Joy Millage, Lyman Bailey, Doris Richardson, Mildred Richardson, Donald Bailey, and Jewell Mefferd.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 1, 2012, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present the entire time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
